Guru Purnima 2025 — Honouring the Eternal Guru Tradition of Bharata
Ashadha Purnima — The Day of Maharishi Veda Vyasa
Guru Purnima is the day Sanatana Dharma pauses to honour its most fundamental relationship — the sacred bond between the Guru and the Shishya. Observed on the Purnima (full moon) of Ashadha month, this day is dedicated to Maharishi Veda Vyasa, the sage who compiled the four Vedas, authored the Mahabharata, composed the eighteen Mahapuranas, and dictated the Brahma Sutras — thereby giving form and structure to the entire body of Dharmic knowledge.
The word Guru itself carries profound meaning: “Gu” means darkness, “Ru” means the remover. The Guru is the one who leads the disciple from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge — from avidya to vidya, from bondage to Moksha.
The Guru Parampara — An Unbroken Chain of Light
What makes Sanatana Dharma unique among the world’s spiritual traditions is the concept of Guru Parampara — an unbroken chain of transmission from teacher to student, stretching from the Rishis of the Vedic age to the Acharyas of the present day. Adi Shankaracharya received from Govinda Bhagavatpada, who received from Gaudapada, who received from Shuka Deva, who received from Veda Vyasa himself. This chain is alive today in the four Amnaya Peethas and in countless living lineages across Bharata.
How to Observe Guru Purnima
- Vyasa Puja: Offer flowers, fruits, and prayers to an image of Maharishi Vyasa or to your own Guru.
- Guru Vandana: Visit your Guru or spiritual teacher. If that is not possible, offer mental prostrations with gratitude.
- Study: Spend time reading the works of your Guru or a text from the Vedantic tradition.
- Dana: Offer dakshina (an offering of gratitude) to your teacher or to a cause that supports Dharmic education.
- Meditation: Sit in silence and meditate on the Guru Tattva — the principle of the Guru as the inner light of awareness itself.
