Devi Kushmanda: the fourth form of Mother Durga

Devi Kushmanda: the fourth form of Mother Durga

Maa Kushmanda is the fourth manifestation of Maa Durga who is worshipped on the fourth day of Navaratri.

Her name means “The Cosmic Egg” and she is considered the creator of the Universe.  When nothing existed and darkness prevailed everywhere, Lord Vishnu was able to create the universe when Maa Kushmanda smiled like a flower which blossomed with a bud, bringing light to the universe.  As the consort of Lord Shiva and the source of all, she is also known as Adiswarup and Adishakti.

Maa Kushmanda rides on the lion which represents relentless pursuit of dharma.  Having eight hands, she holds kamandalu, bow, arrow, a jar of nectar, discus, mace, lotus and a rosary, giving her the name Ashtabhuja.  She blesses her devotees with 8 types of wisdom (Asthasiddhis) and 9 types of wealth (Navnidhis).

She has a radiant face and golden body complexion and resides in the core of the Sun and thus controls the Surya Lok.

Representing the Anahata Chakra in spiritual practice, She is believed to remove all hurdles, troubles and sorrows, bringing light into darkness and establishing harmony in life.

After worshipping, Mata Kushmanda is offered Malpua as Bhog.

In Sanskrit, “Kushmand” means pumpkin and Devi Kushmanda liked the sacrifice of pumpkin and hence this is the other reason that she is addressed with the name of Kushmanda.

Mantra to worship Maa Kushmanda:

Suraa sampoorna kalasham rudhiraplu thwamevacha|
Dadhanaa hasthapadmabhyam Kushmanda shubhadaasthu may ||

I worship the illustrious Goddess Kushmanda,
who holds two pitchers full of nectar and blood in her lotus hands
May she be propitious to me.
