Natural remedies for dark circles

We have all gone through stages where we end up getting dark circles under our eyes and nothing we do seems to make them go away. It sometimes helps to get a good night’s sleep that may diminish their appearance but the dark circles continue to persist despite our best efforts.

The biggest reason for dark circles is your genetic makeup. People with fair or thin skin under their eyes end up getting dark circles from either lack of sleep or slow blood circulation which causes fragile capillaries to stretch and leak.

Other main causes are:

  • Lack of sleep
  • Age
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Over exposure to the sun
  • Improper diet and lack of nutrients
  • Pregnancy
  • Chronic disease

Here are some home remedies for dark circles that are quick and easy to follow:

  • Soak two tea bags in cool water and rest them on your eyes for about 15 minutes. You can also put two slices of cucumber instead for 10-15 then gently massage them over the eyes and rinse.
  • Drink 2-3 glasses of warm water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This not only helps reduce the dark circles but improves your liver’s health. Alternatively, drink one glass of warm water with lemon in it.
  • Mix one tbsp of almond oil with half a tbsp of honey and apply it on the dark circles before going to bed. Gently wash off in the morning.
  • Make a paste with flour, orange juice and honey and apply on the dark circles, leave on for 15 minutes then rinse gently.
  • Apply pure aloe vera gel on dark circles, using fresh aloe leaf if possible.
  • Mix tomato juice with half the amount of lemon juice and make a paste of it with gram flour. Apply on the dark circles for 10 minutes, then rinse gently.

Reducing dark circles with proper diet:

  • Eat fruits and vegetables that are rich in iron.
  • Drink freshly squeezed carrot juice, adding some tomato juice for better results.
  • Add papaya in your diet.
  • Reduce intake of salty food and alcohol.

You can also double up on pillows at night to stop blood from building up under your eyes. Apply a cold compress in the morning for about five minutes to constrict the blood vessels.

Take an over the counter antihistamine if dark circles occur due to allergies.
