Brahmi: Ayurveda’s Super Herb

Brahmi is a flowering plant that is native to India and has been used in ancient Ayurvedic medicine for its various health benefits. Also known as Bacopa, Brahmi is a perennial, creeping herb that grows in wetlands and marshy places.

Traditionally used to treat skin problems, Brahmi also has the following medicinal uses to cure and balance:

  • Insomnia
  • Arthritis
  • Cholesterol
  • Enhances memory
  • Removes mental and physical fatigue
  • Anti-aging
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Bronchitis
  • Coughs and hoarseness
  • Impotency
  • Increases libido
  • Blood circulation
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Regenerates skin cells
  • Hair loss
  • Constipation

Memory Enhancer:
Study suggests that Brahmi shows a significant action of enhancing the capacity of subjects to retain new information while maintaining the capacity to learn. It has been found to significantly improve IQ levels, general ability, concentration and mental clarity.

Anti-oxidant:
Scavenges free radicals in the body while protecting the DNA cleavage.

Alzheimer’s:
Lab tests indicate Brahmi improved cognitive ability and mitigated further reduction of brain neurons.

Anti-depressant:
When compared to an antidepressant drug “imipramine”, Brahmi showed it had the same results.

Asthma:
Constituents found in Brahmi inhibit the formation of calcium ions, thereby affecting a bronco-vasodilatory activity.

Stress Reducer:
Aids as a stress buster by inducing a sense of calm and peace in its users. It also helps sooth restlessness and distraction.

Most herbal medicines are relatively mild and gentle on the human body and Brahmi is no different. There are no known side effects and it can be taken by practically anyone, irrespective of age and gender. There are no addictive components to this herb, making it safe to use Brahmi for extended periods of time without any fear of addiction.  However, since not enough is known about the use of Brahmi by conventional medicine, doctors advise to use precaution for pregnant women, breast-feeding mothers or heart patients.

As with any other natural medicine, Brahmi may take up to 3-4 weeks to show its effect but overall, it is one of the most important Ayurvedic super herbs!
