Ganga Dussehra 2025 — Celebrating the Descent of the Sacred River
Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami — The Day Maa Ganga Descended to Earth
Ganga Dussehra celebrates one of the most magnificent events in the Puranic tradition: the descent of Maa Ganga from the celestial realm to the earthly plane. This sacred day falls on the Dashami (tenth day) of Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, and is observed with great devotion at all the major Ganga ghats — Haridwar, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Rishikesh.
The Sacred Account — Bhagiratha’s Tapasya
The Puranic narrative, told most fully in the Valmiki Ramayana and the Bhagavata Purana, begins with King Sagara of the Ikshvaku dynasty, whose 60,000 sons were reduced to ashes by the gaze of Rishi Kapila when they disturbed his meditation while searching for a sacrificial horse. The souls of these princes could not attain liberation without being touched by the sacred waters of the Ganga, who then flowed only in Swarga (the celestial realm).
Generations later, King Bhagiratha, a descendant of Sagara, performed extraordinary tapasya to bring the Ganga down to earth. Pleased by his devotion, Maa Ganga agreed to descend — but warned that her force would shatter the earth. Bhagiratha then prayed to Bhagavan Shiva, who received the mighty river in His matted locks (jata), releasing her gently as the streams that became the earthly Ganga.
For this reason, the Ganga is also known as Bhagirathi — the one brought by Bhagiratha’s tapasya — and Jahnavi, after Rishi Jahnu who swallowed and released her during her course.
The Ten Sacred Benefits (Dasha Phala)
The name “Dussehra” itself refers to the ten spiritual benefits that Maa Ganga bestows upon those who worship her on this day:
- Purification of the body and mind
- Removal of the ten types of papa (accumulated adharma)
- Fulfilment of the ten directions of life
- Blessings through the ten sacred acts performed on this day
Devotees believe that bathing in the Ganga on this day — or in any body of water while invoking her presence — washes away the accumulated karmic residue of lifetimes.
How to Observe Ganga Dussehra
- Sacred Bath: Bathe in the Ganga or in any river, lake, or at home with water in which Ganga Jal has been added, while chanting the Ganga Stotra.
- Deep Daan: Float a diya (earthen lamp) on the river in the evening — the most iconic ritual of Ganga Dussehra.
- Dana: Offer sesame seeds, barley, water pots, and white cloth to Brahmanas.
- Chanting: Recite the Ganga Stotram, Ganga Aarti, or the thousand names of Ganga.
- Worship ten items: Offer ten types of flowers, ten fruits, and ten deepaks to honour the “Dasha” in Dussehra.
May the eternal flow of Maa Ganga purify our minds, nourish our Dharma, and carry us toward the ocean of Moksha.
