Prayers of a Divided Mind
Once upon a time there lived in India a great devotee of Vishnu. He worshipped and prayed to Vishnu for many years. He went on praying and worshipping. Nothing happened.
One day Vishnu appeared to him and said, “I am pleased with your worship. In response to it, I am giving you three boons. Choose wisely.”
The man who had been worshipping for so many years forgot why he had started the worship. His mind was fleeting so constantly that worship became an obsession with him. He said to Vishnu, “Let me think and recollect what I actually wanted.”
He thought for some time. Suddenly he became aware that he was not in good terms with his wife. So he asked, “I am angry with my wife. Kill her!” Immediately his wife died.
The moment he came to know about her death, he became aware that he loved her very much. As such, he said to Vishnu, “I have loved her very much; please revive her again.” Thus the second boon was wasted.
Vishnu said to him, “Now you have got only one boon left. Think wisely before asking for it.”
The man replied, “Give me enough time to think, otherwise I will again commit a mistake as there is no fourth boon.”
Vishnu waited and waited. Years passed and he came again and again to the man and asked, “Now ask for the third boon. Have you decided?”
The man became puzzled. He could not sleep and almost became insane by thinking as to what to ask, as only one boon was left. He went to persons who were considered to be wise for guidance. They suggested many things but he found them unsatisfying.
Finally, he asked Vishnu, “Please tell me what I should ask. I am going insane by thinking what to ask for.”
Vishnu replied, “There is only one boon you can ask for, which is worthwhile. It is desirelessness. All else is worthless. If you remain obsessed with desires, whatever you may ask, the next moment you will want just the opposite of it. So remember, ask for desirelessness.”

विभक्त मन की प्रार्थनाएं
एक समय की बात है, भारतवर्ष में भगवान विष्णु का एक महान भक्त रहता था। उसने कई वर्षों तक भगवान विष्णु की पूजा की। वह प्रार्थना और पूजा करता रहा पर उसको कोई लाभ नहीं हुआ अर्थात प्रभु के दर्शन नहीं हुए।
एक दिन भगवान विष्णु ने उसपर प्रसन्न होकर दर्शन दिए और कहा, “मैं तुम्हारी पूजा और प्रार्थना से प्रसन्न हूँ, मैं तुमको तीन वरदान देना चाहता हूँ, बुद्धिमानी से मांगना।”
वह आदमी जो इतने वर्षों से पूजा/प्रार्थना कर रहा था, अचानक भूल गया कि उसने पूजा क्यों शुरू की थी। उसका मन इतना अस्थिर हो चूका था कि पूजा उसके लिए एक जुनून बन गई थी। उसने भगवान विष्णु से कहा, “प्रभु मैं वास्तव में क्या चाहता था मुझे अब याद नहीं रहा, याद करता हूँ।”
उसने कुछ समय तक सोच विचार किया फिर उसे अचानक याद आया कि उसके अपनी पत्नी के साथ मधुर सम्बन्ध नहीं थे, तो उसने पहला वर मांगते हुए कहा, “मैं अपनी पत्नी से नाराज़ हूँ। उसे मार डालो!”
तुरंत उसकी पत्नी की मृत्यु हो गई।
जब उसे अपनी पत्नी की मृत्यु के बारे में पता चला, तो उसे अहसास हुआ कि वह उससे बहुत प्यार करता था तब उसने भगवान विष्णु से कहा, “मैंने उसे बहुत प्यार किया है, कृपया उसे फिर से जीवित कर दीजिये।” इस प्रकार उसका दूसरा वरदान बर्बाद हो गया।
भगवान विष्णु ने उससे कहा, “अब तुम्हारे पास केवल एक ही वरदान बचा है। इसको मांगने से पहले, समझदारी से सोच लेना।”
भक्त ने जवाब दिया, “प्रभु मुझे सोचने के लिए पर्याप्त समय दें, अन्यथा मैं फिर से गलती कर दूंगा क्योंकि कोई चौथा वरदान नहीं है।”
भगवान विष्णु प्रतीक्षा करते रहे। वर्षों बीत गए और वह बार-बार उस आदमी से जाकर पूछते, “अब तीसरा वरदान मांगो। क्या आपने तय कर लिया है?”
वह आदमी उलझन में पड़ गया। उसकी रात और दिन का चैन खो गया, वह सो नहीं सका और सोच सोच कर वह पागल हो गया, क्योंकि उसके पास सिर्फ एक वरदान रह गया था मांगने को। वह उन लोगों के पास गया जिन्हें लोग बुद्धिमान मानते थे, उन्होनें उसे कई सुझाव दिए लेकिन वह उनसे संतुष्ट नहीं हुआ।
अंततः वह भगवान विष्णु के पास गया और बोला, “प्रभु, कृपया मुझे बताएं कि मुझे क्या मांगना चाहिए क्योंकि मैं सोच सोचकर पागल हो रहा हूँ किन्तु फिर भी मुझे समझ नहीं आ रहा कि मुझे क्या मांगना चाहिए।”
भगवान विष्णु ने कहा, “तुम केवल एक वरदान मांग सकते हैं, जो उचित है और वह है “इच्छाओं का न होना” बाकी सब बेकार है। यदि आप इच्छाओं से ग्रस्त रहते हैं, तो आप जो भी मांगते हैं, अगले पल आप इसके विपरीत की भी चाह रखते हैं। इसलिए याद रखो कि जो भी मांगों इच्छा रहित मांगो।
