We will crack down against underworld funding real estate: CM Fadnavis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said the government will crack down the nexus of the real estate industry and underworld in Mumbai. In a startling revelation, Fadnavis, who is also the minister for home said, “It has come to our notice that underworld is making huge investments in the real estate business. My government will break the backbone of such operators.”

Fadnavis, who was replying to the debate on home ministry in state legislative assembly, said: “I can state with absolute certainty that underworld have been operating in the real estate industry. Although it gets difficult to procure the documentary evidences, it cannot become an excuse not to crack down against the underworld.”

The chief minister said that the inputs on pro-active role of underworld in the real estate in Mumbai and outskirts have been periodically given to the successive governments which did not take any initiative to tackle firmly.

The real estate business is all about affordable housing for the common people and can be turned into a clean business, if there is a political will which would be displayed by my government, Fadnavis said.

“The underworld operators within country or even those who are operating from foreign countries cannot control the real estate business,” he said.

The crack down will not only confine to underworld but also those in real estate business who are allowing such operations in Mumbai or any parts of Maharashtra, he said.

Earlier, the chief minister denied the opposition’s charge about an increase in threat from the underworld to individuals and increase in crime against citizens. While giving comparative statistics he said, “In last three months data shows decline in overall crime including against women. Yet, even one incident cannot be justified and there will be no let down when it comes to dealing against the criminals.”
