Ayurvedic remedies for amnesia

When a person loses their ability to memorize data or has an inability to recall information that is stored in memory, it is likely they suffer from amnesia.

The most common form of amnesia is the difficulty in remembering words and names while more serious condition can lead to losing personal identity such as the name, age or any recollection of their past life.

Poor memory can be the result of several factors such as a brain injury, drug overuse, alcoholism, defense mechanism from a trauma or some degenerative brain disease such as Alzheimer’s. In case of poor memory caused by weakness of the brain, the patient may suffer from inability to concentrate, headaches or intolerance to noise. Dullness of intellect, weakness of brain or people facing problems in life can also cause poor memory retention.

Below are some natural home remedies to increase brain activity and reduce the less aggressive symptoms of amnesia:

Almonds:

Soak about 7-8 almonds in water overnight. Peel and crush the almonds, add 1tsp of butter and eat them first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Cumin Powder:

Mix 1tbsp of honey with 2 tsp of cumin powder and eat first thing in the morning.

Ashwagandha:

Mix 1 tbsp of Ashwagandha in one cup of milk and drink before going to bed at night. This herb also aids people suffering from insomnia.

Amla:

If available, drink 20ml of amla juice three times a day.  Alternatively, soak dry amla in water for 6-7 hours and drink the water.

Brahmi:

Boil dried Brahmi leaves in water for 10 minutes to make tea and drink twice daily. One of the best brain tonics available in the market, Brahmi can be consumed in tablet form.

Turmeric:

Mix 1tsp of turmeric in milk and drink before going to bed. It can also be used along with Ashwagandha without any side effects. Add turmeric to your cooking.

Basil:

Boil basil leaves in water and make tea out of it. Strain and drink. The leaves can be eaten directly after washing them.

Walnuts:

Eat 20gms of walnut daily to increase brain power.

Some natural tips:

Incorporate healthy foods into your diet that are rich in phosphorus such as cereals, pulses, oranges, grapes, dates, figs and milk. Eat three meals a day and get proper sleep and rest.

Avoid consuming products such as cola, coffee, tea, chocolates, alcohol, sugar, artificial food colours. white rice and chemical additives.

Meditation has been scientifically proven to help the brain handle stress and increase mental ability.

Find ways to increase your brain activity by different methods like reading, increasing your vocabulary, creative writing, playing games such as crossword puzzles, chess or Sudoku.

You can also socialize more or join an interest or hobby group to keep your mind active.
