Ancient Chennakeshava Temple on Alert After Terror Threat

BELUR(HASSAN): The management committee of the Chennakeshava temple in Belur is anxious following a threat by a Pakistan-based terrorist organisation.

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has directed the committee to take steps to intensify the security in and around the temple. The IB informed the matter to temple executive officer Vidulata over the phone.

The temple management has brought the issue to the notice of the district authorities and Superintendent of Police RK Shapurwad, seeking more security.
With no metal detectors at the entrance, the 900-year-old Channakeshava temple lacks proper security arrangements.

It may be recalled that an international terrorist group had threatened to blast the temple in November 2004. The police department had deputed a special protection force, bomb squad and rapid action force following the direction of the IB.

On condition of anonymity, a police official, said the department of archeology should provide security to the temple.

SP Rahul Kumar Shapurwad told Express that steps will be taken to beef up the security in and around the temple.

Sreenivasan, a resident of Belur town, alleged that the departments intensify security only after threat calls.
