Jharkhand: 21-year-old woman shot dead, body hanged from tree by unidentified persons

A 21-year-old woman was shot dead and her body hanged from a tree in a village under Bharno police station area of Gumla district. The incident occurred past midnight on Friday. The identity of the killers remained unclear. The police suspect that her relationship with a youngster, reportedly from another community, could be the reason behind the incident.

According to the police, residents of Jorku Dita village spotted the body of a woman on Friday morning hanging from a tree in a mangrove. The police were subsequently informed.

The woman was later identified as Babli Kumari, daughter of late Sanjay Gupta, a resident of Chowk area in Bharno Block.

“The woman was shot by the assailants and then her body was hanged. The place where the body was found is within a km of her house. It appears that she was called out of the house by somebody and then shot. The incident occurred around 12:30 am,” said Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Basia) Bachan Dev Kujur.

Initial investigations have indicated that the woman was reportedly in relationship with a boy from another community for the past four years. “Her father had died a few years ago and she used to live with her mother. The reports about her relationship with a boy have surfaced and we are probing the same. However, we could not question the victim’s family too much as they were in a state of shock. We are suspecting that the accused knew the victims. Further investigations are on,” said Kujur. Gumla Superintendent of Police Bhimsen T could not be contacted despite repeated efforts.
