Importance of kundali matching before marriage

Importance of kundali matching before marriage

Marriages in India are largely based on Kundali Milan (horoscope matching). It is considered as a crucial step before making any final commitment to the prospective bride and groom. Although, not many believe in this horoscope matching ritual. But those who do, will not get their daughter or son married without matching the ‘gunas’ with their prospective partners.

Not many people know as to why the kundali of the bride and the groom are matched before the wedding is finalised. So, read on to find out the reasons behind this kundali matching custom.

hindu wedding1. To check marriage compatibility

Marriage, in Hinduism is considered to be a sacred union that the couple should not only abide by in this life, but for the next seven successive lives too. Horoscope basically reflects the positions of different planets of a person and their effects on hi3s/her life.

According to shastras, nature considers man and woman as a single identity post-marriage. As a result, one spouse’s destiny, luck and fate influences the other. It can either do wonders or lead to a bad relationship. This is why, kundali milan plays a vital role in decoding the marriage compatibility of two people.

2. To know relationship quotient

Guna or Ashtakoot, is one of the major parameters taken into consideration while matching akundali. Altogether, there are eight gunas that are taken into consideration to test the amity between two people.

Each guna has different numeric points, which when added, sum up to a total of 36. The marriage is acceptable if two kundalis match with 18 or more points. Higher score means better compatibility.

Criteria for Guna matching:

  • Varna – Matching of varna
  • Vashya – Attraction
  • Tara – Longevity
  • Yoni – Nature and characteristics
  • Graha Maitri – Natural friendship
  • Gan – Mental compatibility
  • Bhakoot – Relative influence of one on the other
  • Nadi – Possibility of child birth

3. To foresee mental and physical compatibility

Both the partners’ mindset, behaviour, temper, interest and aptitude are predicted through kundali milan. This ensures a happy marriage. Also, the level of physical attraction is tested since marriage cannot survive if there is no feeling of desirability for each other. Moreover, the health condition of the to-be bride and groom is also a point to be considered. And, this too is revealed by horoscope matching.

Hindu wedding4. To foretell financial conditions and family adjustment

Financial stability is one thing that every parent looks into when they get their son or daughter married. What will be the job prospective in the near future, how stable will be the couple’s financial condition; and even chances of promotions are analysed through kundali.

Besides this, the other thing that is tallied is the adjustment parameter. Whether the girl and the boy can adjust with each other and their respective families or not, whether they can adapt to changing situations or not are part of the matching ritual.

This is the reason why elders generally talk about horoscope matching before a match is finalised. Above everything else, kundali milan is done to ensure that the newlyweds live a ‘happily ever after’ married life.

    Let me see..
Varna Guna indicates matching of varna (a better translation please)

Apart from nitpicking I would like to give some constructive feedback on helping horoscopes gain more legitimacy than just better marketing. The abstract idea of mental and physical compatibility verification is awesome. But, the problem lies in how to trust horoscope.

A lot of people use horoscope for future prediction and match making. Still, many such marriages fail. Many such predictions fail. If we claim it to be scientific then it needs drastic improvements. Also, many of those who claim to be experts in it also in that case do not understand the caveats enough to explain to their clients what are the margins of error in such predictions. Hence, we need to regulate it and make it more professional. But it should all start with scientific verification system, not just feel good theorization.

And till we improve the said science/art of horoscopes, we can check the compatibilities easier ways. Medically get tested for diseases, STD, child bearing capacity etc. Spend time with each other and each other’s family for some time and check how they react to different situations. And other methods you deem fit…

Kundali matching is an exercise in futility. It does not help at all ! All relationships are tied by past lives karma. So if the two people concerned have some past life karma to be resolved, they will get married-even if they have to face many many miseries and sorrows throughout their lives. It does not matter if the astrologer said that it would be a happy marriage. No astrologer can predict the future as our future is continuously governed by our karmas. The astrologers make kundali matching so important just to earn money.

This is a very clear illustration of some of the conflicting beliefs we Hindus hold. If we believe in Horoscope, we should know that

    (a) every individual has his/her personal horoscope
    (b) the horoscope is prepared on the basis of time and place of birth of the native
    (c) the horoscope remains static and true throughout life of the native
    (d) for assessing potential for any issue of life of the native, we only try to analyze the same horoscope
    (e) we do not change horoscope after marriage
    (f) no merging of horoscopes of the couple takes place after marriage
    (g) Scrutiny of personal horoscope continues the same way even after marriage
    (h) Like other aspects of life, the potential about comfort level in married life has to be derived from related houses of the native’s own horoscope e.g., 7th house, 11th house and 2nd house.
    (i) If these houses remain same, the potential of married life would also remain same whether the native marries with x, y or z.

Thus, there is no valid reason for undertaking an exercise like Kundli matching only once in lifetime.

We need to appreciate Law of Karma prior to undertaking astrology. We need to know that only those two persons get into wedlock who share lots of karmic dues to settle. Thus, it is possible that if wrong persons are coming closer and attempting to get married, astrology and kundli matching may become instrumental in deterring them. However, this again would turn true depending upon how strongly both the sides believe in astrology.

There are numerous cases where the couples experience very rough relationship even when their horoscopes matched nicely before marriage.

This Kundli matching is a tool useful during old times when the society was very conservative and it was not possible to see or meet the prospective marriage candidates. We know that Kundli matching revolves around only position of Moon. This was good enough to get a rough sketch of the nature of the natives. However, now we have many aids, more developed and scientific to ascertain compatibility e.g., psychological tests, personality and values tests and we need to prefer them.

Last but not the least, rather than blindly going after horoscope matching, we should better undertake medical tests e.g. RH factors, Aids and other things. This is the call of the day.
