Man held for sacrilege attempt of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in Ludhiana

Police in Ludhiana claimed that a person wearing an Aam Aadmi Party t-shirt was arrested after an attempt of sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib at Isher Nagar gurdwara of Daba area in the city on Monday.

The accused has been identified as Gurdeep Singh of Isher Nagar. He is a dropout from an engineering college at Fatehgarh Sahib. The police also claimed that he is a drug addict.

It was specifically highlighted in the official press release that he was wearing a t-shirt of AAP. With a sketch of martyr Bhagat Singh, the t-shirt has a caption in Hindi which read, “Azaadi se pehle aur azaadi ke baad, jitne huye shaheed zara unko kar lo yaad- Wo they Aam Aadmi.”

ADCP crime Gurjatinder Singh and Jasdev Singh Sidhu ADCP-2 said that the accused was caught by locals when he tried to barge inside the gurdwara premises breaking glass of a windowpane with an intention to tear the pages of the holy granth.

Some women sitting in the shop outside the Gurdwara saw the man while climbing the stairs with shoes and raised an alarm. The members of gurdwara committee and area residents nabbed the accused and informed the police.

A case has been registered against the accused for hurting religious sentiments at Daba police station.
